Poppers made from the Cypress Root

Poppers made from the Cypress Root

Poppers made from the Cypress Root.

The bodies of all the Bea Bea Bad Boys and the Bea’s Poppers are made from the root of the Cypress tree.  This is an excellent and unique alternative to cork, balsa, or foam because it is durable and rot-resistant.  The Cypress tree is a unique tree; the roots are often exposed and provide a good source for the Bea’s products.  Bea Bea Bugs make two different body shapes, the first having a round nose and is called Bea Bea Bad Boy.  Not designed as a popper it is still deadly on bluegill.  There are eleven different modes to choose from.   The most popular model being #15 which has a chartreuse body, black hackle, chartreuse tail and eight chartreuse rubber legs.  Available in hook sizes 8 and 10.  The second model, called Bea’s Popper, has a body shape with a concave face which creates a “pop” sound when the fly line is stripped.  This popper has a chartreuse body, black hackle, chartreuse tail and chartreuse rubber legs.  It is available in hook sizes 8 and 10.   As cork becomes more expensive and scarce the root of the Cypress tree becomes more attractive and is certainly more plentiful and inexpensive.  The benefits of this alternative are numerous and include the fact that the wood is very hard and yet very buoyant.  It holds the paint well and floats correctly, and it reasonably priced, and it catches fish!

A New Year and a New Lure, Rattle Head

We know that bass respond to movement, but do they respond to sound?  The new Rattle Head lure makes noise but the question is, can fish hear the noise?  Fish have a couple of methods of “hearing.”  Fish have a lateral line located along the sides of the fish’s body.  It detects vibrations and changes in water pressure.  Fish also have an “inner ear” which picks up sound waves in the water.  So, yes, the rattle in the Rattle Head lures effectively attracts bass, stripers, and red fish.

Give it a shake, rattle, and cast!  Four versions to choose from all on a 1/0 articulated hook.
