I was catching hand size crappie on fly..when all of a sudden my line went south fast..and around a 5lb bass broke water and spit out a lil crappie..when I got it to the bank it had a huge bite mark
Wish you had caught the bass, too, 2 for 1?
do you weight the line to get it deeper?
Yes, use a very small amount of weight, you don’t need to get too deep. Sometimes you just have to experiment to find what the depth is that the crappie are moving through.
It depends on the fly. For example, the Crappie Bully from the Wilson’s needs a bit of weight, the Crappie Killer and Crappie Candy have bar bell eyes and this is usually enough.
Bully spider is a classic panfish fly the legged wooly bugger size 12 does wonder however my crappie fly is variations of the ghost fly a classic fly that works well
Can you send us a picture of your fly?
If i can find it yes idk if i snavged it up last fall in weeds or not but will share some

I have done my best crappie fishing with a fly rod …..it was non stop far almost an hour ! …..couldn’t pit another fish in the basket !
Thank you for your reply. Would you mind sharing your technique for fly fishing for crappie?
BreamBugs , well it was in my aunts small lake and I noticed that something was hitting bugs on the surface and I took advice from my aunt . and she told me to keep many different colored crafting fuzzballs in my box and and a small pair of scissors and to take a tiny piece of each color and toss it in the water and see how the minnows and fishes react to it ….that day it black . so I chose a black dry fly and used a 6 pound tippet and it was game on ! I am no professional fly fisher by any means but it was so fun !
I catch trout on those in the Smith River..
White or black streamers always works best for me.
Thank you for your comments.
Nice , I always used to tie a lot of different kinds of flies, now I even see some of them in the stores, but not mine!

Flyrods are so deadly for crappie they’re like cheating sometimes. You only need two flies, white or chartreuse
