Closed-cell foam tied on a Mustad 94840 hook this fly is excellent when used alone or as the “dropper” on the Popper/Dropper combo rig. Great for bluegill and smallmouth bass. I fished this Red Sponge Spider this past Sat. morning for Bluegills, also used the Yellow Sponge Spider. Throwing to a spot in about 1-2 foot of water, I was catching fish with the Yellow. The biting stopped, so I starting used the Red and the biting started again. Picked up two large Bluegills in a hurry.
Sat. morning I used Sponge Spiders only. A friend went with me who doesn\'t flyfish, but believes in and loves to fish with BeetleSpins. To make a long story short I caught 25 and he caught 4. Two of his four were caught with a Yellow Sponge Spider near the end of our trip, as I had made a believer out of him and he wanted to give it a try. It wasn\'t pretty, but he did manage to catch the two in just a few minutes.
The great thing was an hour and a half later we, along with our wives, were dining on our catch. Fried fresh Bream (Bluegills). Ate everyone of them. I normally release my fish as I catch them with barbless hooks, but on that morning we predetermined we wanted some Bream to eat for lunch. Yum yum eatumup.
