Are You One of The 12.3 Million Fly-Anglers?
You don’t see as many cork and balsa bugs featured as in the past. I don’t know why, but I will say it isn’t because they have lost their effectiveness. 😉
Thank you for the photo, nice fish. As for cork and balsa bugs, most of our bugs are still cork with some balsa and also some made of the root of the Tupelo Tree (Bea Bea Bugs). Apparently the cork producers are selling so much cork to the wine industry they are not very interested in the “bug” industry. Don Davis, BreamBugs.com
I also make a lot of very small terrestrials out of cork, in the style of the old “Corkers” and others from books like Gerald Almy’s book on terrestrial flies. THAT is truly a lost art now and it’s too bad because I got a very nice brown just last week on a cork ladybug. Like you say, the sources of fly tying cork is few and far between.
Do you sell your small terrestrials to retailers such as BreamBugs? I would be interested in placing some on my site.
Not at this time. I have a very small supply of cork cylinders that wouldn’t be enough to do any kind of commercial level. And “Corkers” was, I think, a trademark property so I don’t know how that would work.
